Prerequisites: this is not for complete beginners, but if you have already been playing guitar for around a year or more, or have completed our Complete Beginners' Acoustic Guitar Course, then you will really enjoy this course and get a lot from working your way through it.
The first part of the course takes you through a number of exercises designed to smooth out and speed up your strumming. These exercises can be applied to all strumming patterns and give you great versatility.
Build confidence in your own style. Once you have built the basic skills that ensure that you will always play smoothly and in good time, we go on to show you many ways you can make your playing sound more intricate and professional. We will give you the tools, but then encourage you to use them in a way unique to you so that you develop naturally and play with your own style.
Try all these ideas out for real. The last two lessons on this part of the course take you through two great songs chosen for their great rhythmic strumming content: 'Take it Easy' by the Eagles and 'Hurricane' by Bob Dylan. Nick shows you exactly how to approach playing these songs on the acoustic guitar and also encourages you to experiment to develop different ways of imposing your own style on the songs.
By the end of the course, you will have greatly improved your strumming technique and have a good grasp of how to play along to any song in good time. You will have formed the foundations of your own style of playing and have the tools to express yourself on the instrument.
